Week 1
In this series, we will cover generosity and what the Bible says about the many facets of generosity. Each week we will learn things about generosity, our generous God and how to be a generous people. This series opens an opportunity to teach our children what it means to give, in many different ways.
As a church, we have several opportunities and connections to give together as a family. During this time in the series, we encourage you as a family to choose some ways to live out generosity. Here are some ideas with local organizations we currently partner with:
Bixby Outreach Center – as a family, you can collect food donations, clothing donations or volunteer hours soringt items.
John 3:16 – a group meets on the 3rd Sunday of every month to cook and serve breakfast
Bixby West School – purchase pantry items for Weekend Food Bags for students and families who are in need of assistance.
Missionaries – we partner with several missionaries around the world. Choose a mission partner to pray for specifically (Team Jordan, Team Somalia, Team Sojourn in Tulsa, Team East Asia, Team Bangladesh/India, Team Clarks with Ethnos360, Team Thang in India/Nepal) and look up their region or organization. Joshua Project is a great resource for learning about missions efforts across the globe. Get a care package together to send or make cards with words of encouragement.
Week 2
In our reading of Psalm 112, we learn of those who fear the Lord. To better understand the passage, we first need to understand what it means to “fear the Lord.” A believer who fears the Lord, has reverence (respect), admiration, and awe for God.
Read Psalm 112 together.
Make a list from Psalm 112 (verbally, on paper, using a whiteboard, etc…) of the character traits of a believer who fears the Lord.
Of the traits you listed, choose one or two that you want to see in yourself. Why did you choose those traits?
Read verses 5a and 9 in Psalm 112. What do these verses tell us about being generous?
As a reminder from week 1, choose ways to show generosity together as a family. Maybe talk through other ways you can be generous with each other in the home.
Week 3
Open up your time in Family Worship talking about ways you have been served generously by others this past week. How does it make you feel when others are generous towards you?
Read 1 Timothy 6:6-8 together.
Define these words: godliness & contentment
Have your kids share in their own words the definition of these words. Now reread verses 6-8 and encourage your kids to share in their own words what these verses are saying to us.
Read 1 Timothy 6:9-10.
Can you share an example of someone who might ‘desire to be rich’ and do ‘senseless’ and ‘harmful’ deeds?
What does the Bible say is the “root of all kinds of evils?” If the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils, how should we as believers think about and treat money?
Family Challenge: choose a neighbor, friend, family member, or church member and show them intentional generosity this week.
Week 4
In Matthew 25:14-30, we read about 3 servants who were trusted with money by the master of the servants. Read Matthew 25:14-30 together and/or watch the Bible Story below.
The Parable of the Three Servants
How many talents were each servant given? And how many talents did they end up with when the master came back?
Why do you think the master gave different amounts of talents instead of the same amount to each servant?
For the servant who did nothing with his talent, what did the master say to him?
What is this parable teaching us about how we should use what we have (money, abilities, opportunities…)?
What abilities and opportunities do you have right now that can be used for God?
